Nestled on the shores of a bay with deep blue waters and spread on the slopes of a hillside with a peninsula to the west, covered in a variety of trees and another peninsula to the east forming the bay of Parga, lies the small picturesque town of Parga.
Opposite to the town’s beach and natural harbour
lays an islet with a tiny chapel and jetty which can easily be reached with a brisk or lazy swim from the two
beaches of Parga, the town beach and Valtos beach. Remarkably although it is on the mainland, it has a distinct island feeling about it.
Parga is part of the periphery of Epirus in the
prefecture of Preveza. The ancient town of Parga is surrounded with countryside of green mountains which are more pronounced to the north-west and rockier with green chaparral to the east. On a clear day, looking out on the Ionian coast, the islands of Paxoi (Paxi), some part of Lefkada end even the southern end of Corfu can be seen.
There is an
old Venetian castle which stands sentinel separating the bay of Parga and its harbour from the crescent shaped sandy beach of Valtos. The old fortress affords excellent views of both bays because it is in the middle and is a great place to let the eyes wander over the horizon. If staring at the horizon is all too much blue for you, you can add various
activities to your stay with short day trips to the inland.
History of Parga
The town of Parga originally named Ypargos, is ancient (as are most in Greece for that matter) and was settled by the Greek speaking tribe of the Thesprotians. It was much later in 1570 that the Venetians built the fortress on the promontory to keep an eye and control of maritime traffic. It was after the Balkan wars that Parga like much of Epirus was finally joined to its geographical and historical owners, Greece and the Greeks.
